The term plastic surgery stems from the Greek word  plastikos, meaning “to mold” or “to form.” The surgical principles of plastic surgery remain focused on preserving vascularity, replacing like tissue with like tissue, respecting anatomic  zones, and fostering wound healing by minimizing tissue trauma.

Vascular surgery

Varicose veins  is a common disorder of the venous system requiring surgical intervention. Clinical examination combined with color Doppler examination is a must in the diagnosis and evaluation. Patients with significant varicosities require early treatment including surgery to avoid long term complications. Ligation with stripping plus avulsion is generally regarded as the ‘gold standard’ treatment for primary long saphenous veins, with good long-term effectiveness .

Benign and Malignant skin conditions

Combining plastic surgery and dermatology in our practice allows to provide the most patient-centered, comprehensive approach in diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant skin conditions. We routinely deal with management of Benign lesions like pigmented lesions (moles, freckles), epidermal lesions (seborrhoeic keratosis, skin tags, corns etc), premalignant conditions (acnitic keratosis, leukoplakia etc.) hair follicle tumors , cysts (sebaeceous cysts, milium) , lipomas, pyogenic granuloma,  hidradenitis suppurativa, Malignant skin lesions(Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma etc). Our treatment modalities include medical management (comprehensive skin care programme), non surgical procedures with lasers to surgical interventions like biopsy, excision, skin grafting, flap cover surgery.

Vas & Tubal Recannalisation

Vas Recannalisation is done to  restore patency of vas in an infertile male who has previously undergone vasectomy.

Tubal Recannalisation is done to allow a woman who has had her tubes tied (tubal ligation) to become pregnant again. The fallopian tubes are reconnected in this reversal surgery with fine sutures  with surgical loupes.

Maxillofacial Trauma

Road traffic accident still remains a major cause of facial injuries resulting in minor skin abrasions – skin laceration – avulsion injuries to facial bone fractures(temporal, frontal, orbital , maxilla, mandible). Restoring facial fractured bones in proper position and repairing soft tissue with less scarring involves several hours of surgical procedures. This re-establishes dental occlusion, sound fracture healing , better facial features with minimal scarring and functional restoration.

Lower limb surgery

Lower extremity has a mechanical component and must bear weight. The lower extremity defects include trauma, diabetes, vascular disease, cancer ablation and other disease process. Plastic surgeon treats by different the lower limb defects  by different suturing techniques, skin grafting, local flaps, perforator flaps, arterial , nerve , tendon repairs

Hand Surgery

Hands help us to eat, dress, write, earn a living, create art and do many other activities. To do these tasks, our hands require sensation and movement, such as joint motion, tendon gliding and muscle contraction. Hand surgery involves a vast range of surgery on the hand. Plastic surgeon who does hand surgery not only ensures the function of the hand, but also makes efforts to maximize the cosmetic appearance of the hand.

Surgery on the hand can be performed for the following below reasons but not limited

  • Tendon repair (flexors and extensors)
  • Nerves and blood vessels  repair
  • Mutilating injuries of hand and upper extremity
  • Soft tissue reconstruction (skin grafts, Flaps cover)
  • Hand tumors, cysts, Ganglion, lipoma
  • Congenital (present at birth) deformities
  • Hand Infection treatment
  • Nail surgery

Diabetic Foot

Plastic surgeon brings on the capability to enhance healing by soft tissue manipulation, following a reconstruction algorithm to manage and salvage diabetic foot ulcers. Plastic surgeon play a critical role in salvage of the limb as durable soft tissue coverage is essential. Autologous skin grafts are one of the most commonly used methods to provide coverage by a plastic surgeon. The skin can be used as a full or partial thickness grafts and require a recipient bed that is well vascularized and free of bacterial contamination. Lower extremity complications remain amongst the most common reasons for hospitalization in people with diabetes. Soft tissue reconstruction by our plastic surgical team can help preserve as much of the residual limb as possible. In some cases, preservation of the foot may be possible avoiding a major amputation.

Burn Wounds

Plastic surgeons are an important part of the burns team that look after patients with burns from the moment they are admitted with burns to discharge and post discharge follow-up. We routinely encounter burn cases with sunburn, flames, hot liquids, chemicals, electrical and radiation burns from scalp to toes.  We classify burns based on the burn degree, percentage of burns, acute or chronic and we treat accordingly to the patient condition with topical applications, fluid resuscitation, pain management, infection control, nutrition management, collagen application, escharotomy, skin grafting, flap cover and surgical management  for post burn sequel.

Advanced wound care management

Although any type of surgeon closes wounds as part of his or her typical surgical care, there are some situations that require the additional expertise a plastic surgeon alone can offer. While wound healing is a natural process of the body, that doesn’t mean it’s simple or even predictable all the time. There are a number of issues that could contribute to difficulty in proper wound healing including diabetes, radiation therapy following surgery, neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease, and wounds due to trauma. Complex treatments such as wound dressings with topical applications, vac therapy, growth factors, foam dressings, collagen dressings, suturing,  skin grafts, tissue transfer(flaps) or wounds that seem reluctant to heal at an expected pace may all require the trained hands and eyes of a plastic surgeon.
